Announcement: The FIRST INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON LINUX will be organized ====================================== december 8 and december 9 1994 in AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands, in the RAI-buildings. (Actually, we're not quite sure that it is the `first' symposium.. but we think it is.) The symposium will be organized together with the Social Sciences Information Technology congress, which starts at december 7, 1994, but the Linux Symposium will be a complete independent happening. This *the chance* to see and meet all those people whose names you regularly see in the postings / Linux activists channels, so let's make this one a success as well! This is a CALL FOR PAPERS, and also a request to indicate if you would consider joining the symposium. The symposium-fee will be rather modest, about $ 50.- (if you're a student) and $ 75.- (otherwise), so we hope we will flood the RAI building with mad Linuxers :-) As of now we will have at least two lecture-rooms (about 100 seats each) available, and are aming at two filled-up days giving each contributor approx. 25 minutes time. The possible subjects for the papers have not yet been decided upon, but the following subjects are suggested: -The Linux and Gnu Philosophy -The Linux Kernel, including items as -Hacking the Linux Kernel -File Systems -Modules -Other supporting software -Communications, with items like -Modems, -Networking -NFS -PPP -Ham Packet Radio -X -Nice applications you designed for Linux -Linux and other (?) operating systems: OS/2, DOS, ... -Switching to Linux This list is only intended to suggest subjects, not to be *the* final list of subjects. If you consider submitting a Paper or a Poster session, we should have received by May, 16, 1994 a short (1 page) summary, stating your intentions, and telling us what you want to present. Then, by june 1 we will have made a final selection and will announce the preliminary symposium program, and we'll inform the authors of the selection. Then, depending on how (and when) the proceedings will be published, the final articles should be ready by either august 1 (in which case we aim at available proceedings in december) or by december (in which case the proceedings will be available after the congress). We don't know yet... The Linux is organized by the ICCE, University of Groningen. The Symposium Organizing Committee consists of: Frank B. Brokken (frank@icce.rug.nl) Karel Kubat (karel@icce.rug.nl) Piet W. Plomp (piet@icce.rug.nl) But *PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE* send all mail about the linux symposium to: >>>> linux@icce.rug.nl If you consider submitting a paper, or a poster, or if you want to join the symposium, or if you have any questions about the symposium, send an e-mail to >>>> linux@icce.rug.nl State your intentions, and give us at least your e-mail address, so we can get back to you.
